SUMMER FLOWER & VEGETABLE PLANTING Grow Your Own – Getting Started First things first, if you don’t have a garden, you can still grow vegetables in containers. Just bear in mind that your veg will be totally reliant on the additional care and feeding that you will need to give them once the nutrient reserves in the compost are used up – which can be as soon as three to four weeks. Raised beds for vegetable growing can be constructed above ground using timber as sidings to your growing area. The earth is warmed earlier in the season and drainage is improved in a raised bed. It also means that there is less bending to reach your work area and are usually designed so that you can access all sides without standing on the soil within them. “Remember this is about growing things you like to eat.” Even a modest garden can find space for a small vegetable growing area. The most important thing is to locate it in the sunniest place possible; that said, if you don’t have an abundance of sunshine in your garden some salad vegetables don’t mind a little shade. Remember this is about growing things you like to eat. Take a look at your weekly grocery shopping list and see if there is anything you might try to grow from scratch.
